Trout Tree Restaurant

by Olesia June 25 2013, 12:12 travel Kenya restaurants

Hello! This post is about our lovely lunch experience in Trout Tree Restaurant in Nanyuki on our way back to Nairobi from Elsa's Kopje in Meru National Park.

When living Elsa's Kopje we were kindly recommended to have our lunch in Trout Tree Restaurant in Nanyuki on our way back to Nairobi. It is about two and a half to three hours from Nairobi, depending on traffic.

We definitely loved the idea of a restaurant in a humongous sacred olive tree in the woods outside Mount Kenya - very imaginatively done, with the great ambiance and very romantic. The setting for the trout tree is really unusual, as it is basically a big tree house with fish farm ponds below.

Trouts are excellent and Eco-friendly being farmed instead of caught in the wild!

Trout breading tanks are on the lower ground level, fed with water from a river nearby, water circulating through each tank of about 4 to 5m in diameter, trout in various stages of growth are in the different tanks.

They also have quite nice territory to stretch your legs and very nice play area for children to have fun.

The resident colobus monkeys added to the setting... The fact that colobus monkeys could steal food from your table just add to the atmosphere. Not many other places where you can see them at such a close range!

It was a delightful experience with the food variety, rustic ambiance and warm staff make a lovely recipe for a great meal. We can certainly recommend this place!

Our tips for those who decide to visit Trout Tree Restaurant:

- pay attention that the Restaurant operates from 10am to 4pm.

- Take a jacket - its open from all sides, so if a breeze picks up it can get a bit chilly.

- There is a sweet little gift shop, so stop by and get your car sticker too.
