Hello! This post is about our safari in Tsavo West National Park and our stay in Kilaguni Safari Serena Lodge.
Tsavo West National park is located on south eastern Kenya, 240km from Nairobi along the western side of Mombasa-Nairobi highway. It took us almost 4 hours to get there from Nairobi. This is the only road from Nairobi to Mombasa, so the drive was quite stressing.
The park has many attractions as Recent Volcanoes, lava flows and caves with potential for geological and cave exploration and hiking. Mzima Springs & underwater hippo and fish watching.
Wildlife in the park is also rich and consists of Leopard, Cheetah, Wild dogs, Buffalo, Rhino, Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Lion,Crocodile, Mongoose, Hyrax, Dik- dik, Lesser Kudu, and Nocturnal Porcupine. Prolific birdlife features 600 species.
Tsavo is also unique whopping 21,000 square kilometers of wilderness. It comprises Tsavo East, West and Chyulu National Parks. It is Africa's largest wildlife protected area, larger than the land of Israel.
Our lodge was located within 30-min drive from the main entrance of the park, so we had a nice game drive reaching it. Here are animals that we saw on our way to our lodge.
We chose Kilaguni Safari Serena Lodge from it's reviews as well as it's position.
The lodge is located in a very nice setting over a large waterhole that can be seen from the restaurant, bar and most of the rooms. You can see a lot of animals coming and going. Visibility to Chyulu Hills from the hotel was good but Mt Kilimanjaro was covered by clouds. This info we lnew from the numerous reviews on the internet, though no review could prepare us for when you walk through reception and see that sensational view.
When you walk through the main entance at Kilaguni it is really amazing as you take in the view. There you can sit comfortably looking out at the water hole and all the animals that go there.
Except the view we loved the idea that free wifi is available in all areas in the lodge.
We also liked the rooms that were luxuriously appointed, with wide, comfortable beds, a dressing table, sofa and wardrobe. Bathrooms were decorated in natural stone type tiles, and sported twin sinks and a large shower enclosure with a glass door. Bath towels, hand towels, flannels and bath robes were provided for guest use. were lovely and big. Double sinks in bathroom, large walk-in shower and lots of wardrobe space. Each of the bedrooms also has a private large balcony overlooking the watering hole with animals.
There are no safe boxes so you have to carry your valuables with you at all times.
The highlight of the location is the watering hole, visible from both bar and restaurant. After a great day of game drives it is such a wonderful experience to sit comfortably ] and have a drink while waiting for the animals to come to you. The waterhole gets visited by baboons, eland, waterbuck, gazelles, elephants, giraffe, guinea fowl, etc. Note that this is much better during the dry season; during the rainy seasons there is no shortage of natural watering holes so the progression of animals is much less spectacular.
The food was some buffet style for lunch but five courses for the evening meal. The restuarant has views overlooking the waterhole which is fantastic during the evening eating a meal by candlelight and watching the wildlife pass by.
The staff are fantastic and will do anything they can to help.
An added service that you receive is having your car washed in the morning.
Lots of wildlife kept us entertained all day long..Our safari drives were brilliant and we were delighted with all the animals we encountered.
We went to Mzima spring in the evening which was a beautiful sight. We saw a lot of hippos yawning and some crocodiles. In Mzima springs they have a nice viewing underwater point, where you can see fishes and other underwater inhabitants.
Shetani lava (devils lava), another must visit place in the park, was a very interesting one-of-a-kind place to visit. DO NOT miss it, when in Tsavo West National Park!
