Hello! My today's post is about the oldest extant church in Georgia - Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral.

Bolnisi Zion or Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is a Georgian Orthodox basilica in the Bolnisi village of Bolnisi District, Georgia. The cathedral was built in 478–493. It is the oldest extant church building in Georgia. In the end of the fifth century, in the epoch of political and cultural strengthening of the country, during the reign of King Vakhtang Gorgasali the Georgian Church achieved independence and the most important building of the period is Bolnisi Sioni.
The church looks simple and laconic from outside. It looks very unusual since it has no hipped dome, the traditional element of Georgian architecture. The most beautiful things about the Cathedral are inside.
Nearby there is a small chapel constructed in the 8th century.
Больнисский Сион - базилика близ г. Болниси, построена в 478-493. Это самая старая сохранившаяся церковь в Грузии. В конце пятого века, в эпоху усиления политической и культурной мощи страны, в течении правления царя Вахтанга Горгасали Грузинская Церковь достигла независимости. Наиболее важное строение этого периода это базилика Болнисского Сиона.
Снаружи храм выглядит достаточно просто, почти примитивно и очень необычно для традиционной грузинской архитектуры. Вся красота храма - внутри.
А рядом с храмом расположена часовня, построенная в 8 веке.

Bolnisi Sioni Cathedrl and the bell-tower
The bell-tower constructed in the 8th century.
The church looks simple and laconic. The walls are tiled with smooth rich turquoise tufa plates.
Two rows of columns supporting the building are connected by arches; the capitals are decorated with carved geometrical patterns.

Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is known for its Georgian inscriptions. These are one of the oldest historical documents of the Georgian alphabet.
Also it hosts the first image of Bolnisi Cross that is now used in Georgian Flag.
Болниси интересен своими надписями - это старейшие образцы грузинского письма на территории Грузии, которые сохранились очень хорошо.
Также именно здесь впервые зафиксировано изображение Болнисского креста, который сейчас используется в Грузинском флаге.
The facade bears the ancient inscriptions which are the oldest samples of Georgian lettering.

These are 8 lines of Georgian lettering around famous Bolnisi Cross which is situated above altar window on the eastern facade.

Bolnisi Sioni interior amazes with its riches and luxury and makes the impression of grandeur.

Well preserved parts of the authentic floor in the church. Плиты с оригинального пола церкви.
Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral now is more like a village church which is a pity, of course. We asked a lady in the church whether there were lots of tourist, and she responded "Just few'.
The entrance to the church is not guarded and is free.

Болнисский Сиони сейчас, к сожалению, больше похож на простую деревенскую церквушку. Женщина, что продает свечи, пожаловалась нам что туристов практически не бывает.
Вход в храм свободный.
